UAE temporarily allows entry for residents with expired visas

The United Arab Emirates has announced a temporary easing of entry requirements for residents currently staying outside the country.

Main Points
  • Residents whose UAE visas expired on or after 28 February 2026 may return during a special one-month grace period ending 31 March 2026.
  • No prior entry permit is required during this window; residents may enter directly and address their immigration status after arrival.
  • On arrival, eligible residents can renew their residency visas through standard procedures without incurring fines or penalties.
  • The ICP advises monitoring official channels for updates, as it is not yet known whether the grace period beyond 31 March 2026 will be extended.

Entry to the UAE with an Expired Residency Visa

The UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has decided to allow the unimpeded return of residents currently outside the country whose residency visas have expired.

This opportunity is available for one month, from 28 February to 31 March of the current year (2026).

The measure applies to UAE residency visa holders whose visas expired on or after 28 February 2026, and who were unable to return to the UAE while abroad due to airspace closures and flight cancellations.

Until 31 March, these residents will be permitted to enter the UAE without the need to obtain a prior entry permit. Upon arrival, they will be able to regularize their immigration status in the UAE (renew their residency visas for a new term) through standard procedures and without being subject to any fines or penalties.

UAE Immigration Authority Position

According to the ICP, this decision was made in response to exceptional circumstances involving the disruption of international air travel. The measure reflects the UAE authorities’ humanitarian approach to emergency response, aiming to reduce the administrative burden on residents and facilitate their return to the UAE for family reunification.

The Authority confirmed its ongoing commitment to addressing issues related to flight delays and schedule changes, while providing the necessary support to residents affected by these circumstances.

Additionally, the ICP recommends staying updated through official channels, reaffirming its readiness to ensure the stable operation of services and to assist travelers under all conditions.

Important to Note

The entry window for residents with expired visas is currently set to expire on 31 March 2026. No information is available yet on whether the grace period will be extended. To take advantage of this right, consider visiting the UAE before the end of March of this year.
