Staying Outside the UAE for Over 6 Months: How to Prevent Visa Cancellation

Staying Outside the UAE for Over 6 Months How to Prevent Visa Cancellation

An UAE residence visa grants the right to enter the country freely for living, working, and conducting business. However, staying outside the UAE for an extended period (more than 180 days) results in the automatic cancellation of most types of residence visas. If the permitted period of absence from the country is exceeded, you can apply for a re-entry permit to maintain your visa’s validity and avoid complications at the border.

Main Points
  • A residence visa (excluding the "Golden Visa") is automatically cancelled if the holder remains outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days.
  • If your absence from the UAE has already exceeded six months, you can apply for a re-entry permit via the ICP or GDRFA.
  • Entering the UAE using a re-entry permit within 30 days of its issuance allows you to avoid cancellation and keep your residence visa active.
  • The application is submitted online from abroad, provided there are valid reasons for the absence and the residence visa has not yet expired.
  • Due to regional instability in 2026, authorities may show some flexibility; however, obtaining a re-entry permit remains the most reliable way to secure your visa status.

Why Can a Residence Visa Be Cancelled?

A UAE residence visa – a permit to live in the country for one year or more – grants its holder the right to enter and exit the Emirates freely as many times as they wish without any additional formalities. This right remains valid throughout the entire duration of the visa’s term.

However, if a residence visa holder stays outside the UAE and fails to visit the country at least once within a six-month period (180 consecutive days), their visa is automatically cancelled (with the exception of “Golden Visas”). Consequently, the right to free entry into the UAE is forfeited.

The reasons for being absent from the UAE for more than six months can vary: traveling for medical treatment, internships, temporary employment in another country, or other personal and family circumstances. In 2026, such reasons may also be linked to military activities in the Arabian Gulf region, which have disrupted air travel and shipping in the UAE and neighboring Gulf states, leading to the suspension of many business operations.

How to Maintain UAE Resident Status

How can you keep your residency visa active and legally return to the UAE if your permitted period of absence is about to expire or has already passed?

  1. Short-term visit to reset the absence timer. If 180 days have not yet passed since your last departure from the UAE, it is sufficient to fly into the country for at least one day. Upon passing through passport control, the absence “counter” will reset, and your residence visa will remain valid for the next six months (subject to the visa’s overall expiration date).
  2. Applying for a re-entry permit. If you have already been outside the Emirates for more than 180 consecutive days, your residence visa will be automatically cancelled upon an attempt to enter the UAE. However, to prevent this, you can apply for a re-entry permit (return permit) and visit the UAE based on that authorization.

Exception for Golden Visas

Residence visa cancellation after 180 days of absence from the UAE does not apply to UAE Golden Visa holders. These visas are issued for up to 10 years and do not require regular visits to the UAE.

During the validity of this visa, the holder may stay in the UAE or abroad for any amount of time without risk of losing their resident status.

When to Apply for a Re-entry Permit?

The re-entry permit application is submitted online by the applicant from outside the UAE. 180 days must have passed since the applicant’s last day of stay in the UAE, but the residence visa for which it was issued must not yet have expired (at least 30 days must remain before its scheduled expiration date).

To determine whether you can apply, find the date of your last departure from the UAE in your passport. Then count 180 calendar days. If your planned return date to the UAE is after this period, you can apply for a re-entry permit.

Procedure for Obtaining a UAE Re-entry Permit

The application for a re-entry permit is submitted through official government services:

  • For Dubai: Via the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA);
  • For other Emirates: Via the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP).

A service fee is required for the review of the application and the issuance of the re-entry permit. If the re-entry permit is approved, you must enter the UAE within 30 days of the approval date. In this case, your residence visa will remain active and continue to be valid until its original expiration date.

Documenting Reasons for Absence

When applying for a re-entry permit, the applicant must specify the reason for their absence from the UAE and upload supporting documents. “Standard” valid reasons typically include medical treatment, education, or business trips. Extended absences from the country can also be caused by various unforeseen circumstances, such as flight disruptions resulting from regional crises.

These reasons must be detailed in an explanatory letter. If the period of absence is significantly extended, immigration authorities may request additional evidence (e.g., medical records, confirmation of circumstances that prevented travel). In the case of a UAE employment visa, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the employer may be required.

Temporary Concessions

During March and April 2026, Dubai’s immigration authorities demonstrated a flexible approach regarding the cancellation of residence visas for those absent from the UAE for more than 180 days. Despite the lack of official announcements on the matter, reports surfaced of a “pause” or “grace period” for visa cancellations affecting residents who had “slightly” exceeded the stay-away limit due to circumstances beyond their control. These residents were able to return using their existing visas without having to apply for new entry permits.

However, this does not mean that such relaxations will remain in place for long or that they apply to everyone. Therefore, to maintain the validity of a UAE residence visa, it is recommended to obtain a re-entry permit and visit the UAE within 30 days of its issuance.
